We can’t all be professional eSports superstars, but we CAN get in on the action. How, you ask? Well, first, let’s talk about eSports.
eSports is a term used to describe a competitive video game that has amassed popularity, and usually has paid tournaments based on it. Usually these games are shooters or strategy games. eSports have a massive fan base and most players in the top tier teams are basically celebrities, there are lots of tournaments all year round for every game. There are tournaments ranging from small prize pools of only a few thousand dollars, to huge prize pools, like this year’s Dota 2’s The International, which had a prize pool of over 18 million dollars.
There are basically a handful of major eSports games: Dota 2, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, Smite, Counter Strike, Call of Duty, Starcraft, Warcraft, and Hearthstone. Surely there are plenty of games I didn’t list, mainly because of their popularity.
So let’s break it down. First, you have MOBAs or Massive Online Battle Arena games, this is usually a 5v5 top down action-strategy game, where a player controls a hero, and each team battles to defeat the enemies base. Games of this genre are Dota 2, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, and Smite.
Next you have your FPSs or First Person Shooters. These would be games like Counter Strike and Call of Duty. These are pretty self explanatory, they are shooter games where each team must eliminate the enemy achieve some sort of objective.
There are also games like Starcraft which falls in the category of or Real Time Strategy. In the tournament world this is usually a 1v1 scenario where each player chooses a “race” and must build a base, amass an army and use tactical strategy to defeat his enemy.
And then there’s Hearthstone, this is a card based game, similar to Magic the Gathering. This 1v1 game pits two opponents with their decks against each other the player who uses the best combination of cards defeats his opponent. These games are sometimes based on a little luck since you have no control of which cards you will be dealt.
Most of these games are free to play so if you’re interested you can check them out!
